Robbie Simpson, Lloyd James & Liam McAlinden

Lloyd James

Former Wales Under-21 international James spent four years with Leyton Orient after being brought to Brisbane Road by Russell Slade in 2012, and left the club on the expiry of his contract earlier this month.

The 28-year-old spent the first ten years of his career with Southampton, turning professional with them in 2005. He scored his first professional goal against the Grecians at St. Mary’s on Boxing Day 2009, and later moved to Colchester United, where he would make over fifty appearances. A short loan at Crawley Town followed, before the Bristol-born defensive midfielder joined Orient after a successful trial.

He said: “I’m delighted to get it over the line, and I’m really looking forward to getting started. The manager phoned my agent, and it was something that really interested me. The style of football is a big plus, and after a discussion with the manager, everything just felt right. The club came close to going up last year; hopefully we can go one step further this year.”

Robbie Simpson

Highly-rated 31-year-old striker Simpson departed fellow League 2 side Cambridge United this summer. The former Norwich City youngster played for both Cambridge City and Cambridge United early in his career, managing over fifty goals in just over a hundred combined appearances for both clubs. A move to Coventry City followed, and sixty-one games later he made the move to Huddersfield Town.

He would twice leave the John Smith’s Stadium on loan, first to Brentford and then Oldham Athletic, before moving permanently to the Latics in 2012. He spent most of the 2013-14 season at Leyton Orient, where he would play alongside Lloyd James, before returning to Cambridge United on their promotion to the Football League that summer.

He said: “I’ve got a previous relationship with the manager – he was my manager when I played for England at university level. We’ve kept in contact ever since, and I felt the time was right to come here. As soon as I met him about a week ago, the deal was done really quickly; I really wanted to come. I’ll bring workrate and give it my all, and hopefully some goals and assists, but more importantly adding value to the team.”

Liam McAlinden

The 22-year-old frontman left Wolves this summer after spending the last couple of months of the 2015/16 season on loan at Crawley Town, following a short stay at League 1 Shrewsbury Town earlier in the campaign.

After nine years in the academy at Molineux, Liam turned pro with Wolves in 2010, and would play a part in the club’s League 1 title-winning season in 2013-14, scoring his first senior goal in the Football League Trophy against Walsall before a first league goal in a 1-0 win at MK Dons.

His Football League pedigree was fleshed out with two loan spells at Shrewsbury Town either side of a further two temporary spells with Fleetwood Town.

Though he was born in Cannock, Staffordshire, Liam represented Northern Ireland at under-21 level (qualifying through his grandfather) before switching allegiance to the Republic of Ireland, thanks to his parents, in 2014.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Liam said: “It was what I needed, to get it all done early in the summer. It’s all sorted now, and I’m looking forward to getting under way.
“I’ve been out on loans, but they haven’t always worked out as I would have expected. It’s pleasing, though, to find a new home; it’s going to be a great experience for me, and I’m really looking forward to it. It was close in January – I was nearly coming here on loan, and things didn’t quite work out, but as soon as it came about that I was going to be available on a free in the summer, we got back in touch, and we’ve got it done as soon as we could. I’m delighted.

“City were probably one of the best teams that I came up against while playing for Crawley – they got the ball down, passed it through us and caused us problems. Now I want to score as many goals as I can; I’m a goalscoring centre-forward who likes to get behind a defence. I’m quick and I’ve got good movement, and I’m hoping that playing in a good footballing side will get the best out of me. The manager knows how to get the best out of players, and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”
